Invent a holiday! Explain how and why everyone should celebrate.
If I could invent a new holiday, I would call it “Appreciate Ourselves Day.”
We already have Thanksgiving to show gratitude for others, but we often forget to thank one very important person — ourselves. On this day, everyone would take time to admire and appreciate their own being: body, soul, and spirit.
In today’s society, people are often pressured to fit into others’ expectations — to become what the world wants them to be. But the truth is, we were not created to please others; we were created to be ourselves. To appreciate ourselves is to recognize that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Last Friday, I met a friend who is a nurse. I gave her a card to comfort her heart, and as we talked, she began to cry. She said her colleague always spoke harshly to her, and she felt deeply hurt. I wanted to comfort her, but I also realized something — we often expect ourselves to grow up too fast, to handle everything perfectly. We forget that healing and growth both take time.
This holiday would remind us to slow down and say to ourselves, “You’ve done your best. You are good enough.” The best friend we can have in life is often our own heart. When challenges come, we need to speak kindly to ourselves, to encourage our spirit, and to let the Lord remind us that He knows us fully, even when others don’t.
“Appreciate Ourselves Day” would not be about pride, but about grace — learning to love ourselves as God loves us.
