Name the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not your home or car).
The most expensive personal item I have ever purchased is my Strategic Career Planning Consultant license (SCPC) — an international certification from the United States. It cost me about $2,000 USD, but it was worth far more than money. When I decided to buy it, I also decided to define my path: I am a consultant.
This investment wasn’t just for a license; it was for my future and my growth. The course included 40 hours of training with highly experienced instructors who had worked as consultants in large corporations. What influenced me the most wasn’t just the theories, but the heart behind consulting — how to communicate with clients through empathy, patience, and genuine listening.
Being a consultant begins with knowing myself. Only when I understand my own values and thoughts can I ask deep, guiding questions to help others find their direction. This skill doesn’t just help me in my work—it helps me become a better friend, classmate, sister, and daughter. I’ve learned that when we stop judging and start listening, we create peace—not only with others but also within ourselves through the Lord’s grace.
This license also required real practice. I’ve worked with two clients so far, and both experiences helped me grow. One client was a college student deciding which graduate school to apply to; another was a graduate student in physical fitness trying to choose between freelancing and working at a gym.
Through the SCPC tools, I guided them to write down their goals, explore their motivations, and discover what they truly wanted. In the end, both of them succeeded—one was admitted to a sports science graduate program, and the other became a gym instructor.
Through these journeys, I’ve learned that being a consultant is not just a job—it’s a calling. This license gave me confidence that my listening, writing, and curiosity are valuable gifts. Every person has a story, and perhaps, through listening and guidance, we can help them design a life that reveals the light waiting inside them.
